The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled its official poster and announced changes to its ticket pricing alongside the launch of its 2026 crowdfunding campaign. This year’s festival will take place from October 26 to November 4, 2026.
Press accreditation for the 39th edition is now open, granting access to press screenings and press events across the festival. Applications run through the official 2026 TIFF site at Tokyo International Film Festival and close on October 15 at 23:59 JST.
The official poster continues TIFF’s recent collaboration between graphic design and filmmaking. Graphic designer Oshima Idea, who designed last year’s poster, has teamed up this year with director O Mipo, known for films including The Light Shines Only There, Living in Two Worlds and How Dare You? It features Shimada Tetta, the young lead of How Dare You?, photographed by the film’s cinematographer Tanaka Hajime.
A Poster Built Around Connection
The image reflects the 39th TIFF theme, “Connecting—Cinema Connects Us to the World Beyond.” Shimada appears in an oversized men’s suit, representing a bridge between children and adults and, more broadly, cinema’s ability to connect people across generations.
In her statement accompanying the poster, O Mipo reflected on the boundaries people create between childhood and adulthood, women and men, work and love, as well as between cultures and values.
“Gazing at the screen alone in the dark, we share the same light; slowly but surely, we can change our future by accumulating these experiences.”
The festival describes cinema as a way of moving beyond political, economic, cultural, religious and gender divisions, allowing audiences to encounter the human experiences behind events taking place beyond their own borders.
New Ticket Prices and Crowdfunding Campaign
TIFF has also introduced new ticket pricing for 2026, citing sharply rising operational costs and the need to ensure the festival’s sustainability.
Adult tickets will cost 3,500 yen for the Opening Film, Centerpiece and Closing Film; 2,700 yen for Gala Selection and TIFF Series titles; and 2,200 yen for other films. Student tickets range from 1,100 to 2,700 yen depending on the section, while same-day student tickets are 700 yen for all screenings except the Opening Film, Centerpiece and Closing Film, which are 2,700 yen. TIFF newsletter subscribers will also receive a 500-yen discount voucher valid during the festival.
Meanwhile, TIFF’s crowdfunding campaign launches on September 11 at noon through Makuake and runs until October 9 at 10:00 PM. The program raised a record 25.46 million yen in 2025.
Rewards this year include access to the Opening Red Carpet on October 26, which TIFF says is being upgraded for the first time since the event moved to Hibiya, intended to increase opportunities for supporters to interact with red-carpet guests.
