The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has joined a consortium exploring the creation of the Canada Global Media Tech Fund, a proposed public-private investment vehicle designed to strengthen Canadian media and technology companies while connecting them with international growth markets.
Announced on August 11, the initiative follows the signing of an Expression of Interest involving the CMF, The Interlink Group, the Vancouver Asian Film Festival, the Racial Equity Screen Office and Muslims in Media. The agreement represents an initial step toward developing the fund rather than the launch of a fully established financing programme.
If developed, the fund would support the creation and commercialisation of Canadian intellectual property with international potential. Its scope could extend across film, television, digital media, gaming, the creator economy, artificial intelligence, virtual production and emerging content technologies.
Connecting Canada with international markets
One of the central ambitions behind the initiative is to position Canada as a strategic link between North America, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Asia-Pacific and other high-growth markets.
The proposed model would combine public resources, private investment and international partnerships, creating new opportunities around investment, co-production, technology development, content creation and global distribution.
According to CMF President and CEO Valerie Creighton, exploring new financing models aligns with the organisation’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, including its objective of creating stronger pathways to global markets and expanding opportunities for content driven by market demand.
The initiative reflects the Canada Media Fund’s broader push to open new international pathways for Canadian screen and media-tech companies. While the Canada Global Media Tech Fund remains at an exploratory stage, its development could give Canadian producers and technology businesses a new platform for accessing investment, partnerships and audiences across some of the world’s fastest-growing media markets.
