PALME AND PARDO
Romanian cinema is having a remarkable 2026. In May, Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, giving the director his second Palme after 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007. Then, in August, Florin Șerban’s You Don’t Belong Here (Nu e locul tău aici) received the Pardo d’Oro at Locarno.
Behind that creative momentum, Romania is also strengthening its production offer. The Office for Film and Cultural Investments (OFIC) currently administers a 30% cash rebate on eligible expenditure incurred in Romania, alongside support with production resources and filming procedures.
The production map ranges from Bucharest and its varied architecture to Transylvania’s medieval towns, the Carpathian Mountains, Bucovina and the Black Sea coast, with major facilities such as Buftea Studios supporting larger shoots close to the capital.
For qualifying cross-border productions involving more than one EU Member State, total state aid can cover up to 60% of the project’s eligible production costs, compared with the standard 30% Romanian cash rebate on eligible local expenditure.
