Spanish public broadcaster RTVE has signed a cooperation agreement with DIBOOS and PROA aimed at supporting the production, financing and promotion of animation made in Spain.
The agreement was signed at RTVE’s Prado del Rey headquarters by RTVE Secretary General Alfonso Morales, DIBOOS President Nathalie Martínez and Iván Agenjo Castaño, president of the ProAnimats association and vice-president of PROA’s board.
DIBOOS represents Spanish animation and visual effects producers, while PROA brings together audiovisual production associations. Through closer coordination with the two organisations, RTVE intends to encourage new projects and contribute to increasing both the quantity and quality of Spanish animated productions.
Closer Cooperation with Independent Producers
According to RTVE, this is the first cooperation agreement it has signed directly with the independent production sector. The initiative therefore creates a more formal channel of communication between the public broadcaster and organisations representing animation producers.
DIBOOS and PROA will promote the Spanish animation industry and highlight RTVE’s role as a strategic partner in the development of projects. They will also encourage their member companies to adopt good practices concerning equal opportunities, diversity, harassment prevention, child protection and professional training.
Responsible artificial intelligence is another area covered by the agreement. Participating organisations will promote the use of AI in a way that respects intellectual property, an increasingly relevant issue for animation and visual effects companies as generative technologies become more widely integrated into production workflows.
The agreement follows several years of growing RTVE involvement in domestic animation. The broadcaster has signed more than 25 contracts with Spanish animation companies in recent years and selected five children’s series through its 2025 animation call. RTVE has also participated in animated feature films including Momonster: The Movie, A World of Their Own, Evolution, Superthings: The Movie and The Light of Aisha.
RTVE’s children’s channel Clan already gives substantial space to European and Spanish content. In 2025, European productions represented 73.75% of the channel’s broadcasts, while Spanish works accounted for 41.48% of its programming, making Spain the most represented country in the schedule.
For Spanish producers, the importance of the agreement will ultimately depend on how this closer relationship translates into concrete development, financing and commissioning opportunities. Nevertheless, establishing a structured dialogue between the country’s public broadcaster and its principal animation associations is a positive step for an industry that depends on long-term partnerships to develop competitive projects and reach international audiences.
