La Vénus Électrique opens the 79th edition

French director and screenwriter Pierre Salvadori‘s La Vénus électrique will open the 79th Cannes Film Festival next Thursday, May 12, at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, following the ceremony hosted by actress Eye Haïdara.

Simultaneously, the film—a burlesque romantic comedy set in the glittering Paris of the 1920s—will be released in French cinemas.

Starring Pio Marmaï, Anaïs Demoustier, Gilles Lellouche, Vimala Pons, and Gustave Kervern, it is Salvadori’s 11th film and his first period piece. In it, the director continues his poetic exploration, immersing his recurring themes (lies, ambiguity, simulation) in the atmosphere of artistic effervescence, popular entertainment, and spiritualism that characterized early 20th-century Paris.

“In its own way, my film embodies all the trust and love I have for every aspect of this art form, cinema, which Cannes celebrates. And I am extremely proud that it is the opening film.”

La Vénus électrique is produced by Les Films Pelléas, in co-production with Versus, France 2 Cinéma, Pio & Co, Tovo Films, RTBF (Belgian television), BeTV, Orange, and Proximus. Distributed in France by Diaphana Distribution, international sales are handled by Goodfellas.
