Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook Premieres November 6 on Apple TV

Apple TV has unveiled the trailer for its new culinary docuseries “Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook,” premiering November 6. The eight-episode series follows Nora Lum, aka Awkwafina, on a road trip across the United States as she tries to revive her family’s beloved Chinese restaurant.

Her family owned Lum’s, the iconic Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York. Nora has inherited this important family tradition, but her skills in the kitchen are still very much a work in progress. She admits as much in no uncertain terms: “I can’t cook. At all.” With help from renowned chefs, celebrated restaurateurs and her family, she sets out to sharpen her kitchen skills, explore contemporary Asian American cuisine and reimagine Lum’s legacy for a new generation.

A Cross-Country Road Trip to Learn the Family Trade

Along the way, Nora takes an intensive course at the Culinary Institute of America, heads to Texas to learn the secrets of barbecue with Jimmy O. Yang, and learns from culinary icons such as Roy Choi and Martin Yan. In Hawaii, she explores the tiki culture that inspired her grandmother’s restaurant, before taking on a new challenge: working in a restaurant in Los Angeles‘ Chinatown.

It all leads up to a high-stakes opening night and the most demanding VIP customer of all: her grandmother.

“Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook” is produced for Apple TV by Twofour and executive produced by Nora Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss and Caroline Davies. It marks the second collaboration between Twofour and Apple TV, after the acclaimed, Emmy-nominated travel series “The Reluctant Traveler,” starring Emmy winner Eugene Levy.
