IDM 15 years of Cinema and…Music

Turns 15 IDM Film & Music Commission Südtirol, and celebrates this important anniversary on the occasion of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival.

With more than 5,000 days of filming in the area, more than 420 projects supported (with a total annual allocation of 4.5 million euros) and an estimated reinvestment value in South Tyrol of 132 million euros, the film commission, headed since last year by Renate Ranzi, has made its way in the world of cinema.
And of music, since Ranzi’s new leadership also coincided with the start of management (entrusted by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano) of the Music Fund, thus becoming IDM Film & Music Commission Südtirol.
There are 10 music projects that received funding in 2025. The Music Fund currently has a total annual budget of 275,000.00 euros.

Among the virtuous examples of international co-productions supported by the fund during pre-production and filming in South Tyrol, and realized thanks in part to the involvement of a large number of local professionals and companies, is Vermiglio by Maura Delpero, winner of the Silver Lion-Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, which then represented Italy in the Oscar race.

In addition to Maura Delpero, in recent years many other Italian and international filmmakers have chosen South Tyrol as a film location to tell their stories, among them: Giorgio Diritti, Silvio Soldini, Leonardo Di Costanzo, Terrence Malick, Alessandro Siani, Andrea De Sica, Ronny Trocker, Evi Romen, Abel Ferrara, Tizza Covi, Laura Bispuri, and again the Swede Ruben Östlund who, with the film Forza Maggiore shot in South Tyrol with support from the Fund in 2014, had made the shortlist of finalists to compete for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

In addition to the Fund, since its beginnings, IDM has also invested heavily in the area to foster the development of film infrastructure, creating a solid audiovisual industry, which today can rely on more than 20 production companies, and more than 700 professional and specialized companies involved in the film industry, an induced activity that contributes to the creation of concrete jobs in the sector.

It is precisely the local talents and workers that have always been one of IDM’s most important resources, which is why throughout the year it actively collaborates with the South Tyrolean ecosystem-comprised of, among others, ZeLIG – School of Documentary Film and the Bolzano Film Festival Bozen-for professional development activities and visibility platforms for local projects.

The long-term goal is not only to have well-trained workers in the area who can be competitive in the market, but also to increase the creative potential of South Tyrolean talents and support them in their artistic journey.

In addition to support in pre-production, production and a line of funding intended for short films, IDM has allocated other funds to continue to accompany productions even in the launch phase of supported projects. Such as the Fund linked to Distribution, which was established a few years ago, thanks precisely to the experience gained with Vermiglio.
Beneficiaries of the contributions provided for in the funding criteria are producers of films made with the support of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano that compete for one of the following awards: Oscar, Golden Globes, Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Golden Bear at the Berlinale.

The economic and logistical support for productions, the constant training and support for the local industry, the territorial position-which allows it to be a conduit for the emergence of co-productions between Italy and neighboring German-speaking countries-and, now, also the possibility of giving new impetus to the development of the creative industry in South Tyrol, as a hub for music productions as well, has allowed IDM to become a reference point and a reliable partner recognized on the Italian and international scene.
