Also out of competition are \u201cNight Train to Lisbon\u201d by Bille August with Jeremy Irons, Martina Gedeck, Christopher Lee and Charlotte Rampling, and \u201cBefore Midnight\u201d by Richard Linklater starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.<br \/>\nThe competition section features a rich line-up which includes, amongst others, long-awaited works such as \u201cPromised Land\u201d by Gus van Sant, the DreamWorks cartoon \u201cThe Croods\u201d by Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, \u201cCamille Claudel 1915\u201d by Bruno Dumont, \u201cElle s\u2019en va\u201d by Emmanuelle Bercot, \u201cClosed Curtain\u201d by Jafar Panahi, \u201cSide Effects\u201d by Steven Soderbergh and \u201cPrince Avalanche\u201d by David Gordon Green. Also out of competition is \u201cDark Blood\u201d by George Sluizer, which promises to be the \u201cbig story\u201d of this edition as it is the last movie by River Phoenix who died suddenly during filming.<br \/>\n\u201cIndependent cinema is going through a rebirth all over the world\u201d, says the festival director <strong>Dieter Kosslick<\/strong>. \u201cFast and turbulent: life is hard and unfair, but it still provides lots of entertainment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently we Italians have not been able to embrace this phase. In fact, once again, our movies are noticeable by their absence at the Berlinale: it is the same old story, after a relatively good edition last year, when the Taviani brothers\u2019 \u201cCaesar must die \u201c was selected and went on (surprisingly it should be said) to win the festival.<\/p>\n<p>This time Italy will only be represented by a handful of titles by young filmmakers in the fringe sections and no established names except for <strong>Giuseppe Tornatore<\/strong> and \u201cThe best offer \u201c in the Berlinale Special, where it will be in the illustrious company of Tom Hooper\u2019s \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d and \u201cThe Look of Love\u201d by Michael Winterbottom, Ken Loach (with the documentary \u201cThe Spirit of \u201845\u201d) and Jane Campion (who will be presenting her mini-series \u201cTop of the Lake\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The problems with this festival are well known and are nothing new: the Italians have always favored other showcases deemed to be more prestigious, that offer the possibility of greater visibility and promotion. It could also be said that this year not many of the movies were coherent with the line taken by the Berlinale.<br \/>\nBut, quite\u00a0extraordinarily, there were two Italian movies in competition at Sundance, the festival that, in a certain way, fishes from the same \u201cpond\u201d as the Berlinale: \u201cThere will come a day\u201d by Giorgio Diritti, set in Amazonia, and \u201cThe Future\u201d by Alicia Scherson, a co-production by Mario Mazzarotto\u2019s Movimento Film with Chile, Germany and Spain, based on the novel by Roberto Bola\u00f1o, both independents with an international, original feel.<\/p>\n<p>In Berlin the Italian flag will be flying in the Forum section thanks to \u201cDark Matter\u201d, a documentary by <strong>Massimo D\u2019Anolfi<\/strong> and <strong>Martina Parenti<\/strong> and, at least in part, the co-production with Greece, \u201cI k\u00f3ri (The Daughter)\u201d by <strong>Thanos Anastopoulos<\/strong>. Then there are the shorts \u201cMatilde\u201d by <strong>Vito Palmieri<\/strong> (in the Generation Kplus section) and \u201cAl Intithar\u201d by <strong>Mario Rizzi<\/strong> (a co-production with the United Arab Emirates in the Berlinale Shorts section).<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <strong>Cristina Comencini<\/strong> and <strong>Alice Rohrwacher<\/strong> will be in Germany looking for possible co-production partners on the international market. Their projects (respectively \u201cDon\u2019t Forget\u201d and \u201cLe Meraviglie.
