{"id":40013,"date":"2019-11-22T11:08:08","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T11:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinema.video\/?p=40013"},"modified":"2026-04-10T03:46:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:46:37","slug":"switzerland-business-off-the-beaten-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinema.video\/it\/switzerland-business-off-the-beaten-track","title":{"rendered":"SWITZERLAND Business off the beaten track"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pavarotti_70x100_DCH_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40086\" width=\"177\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pavarotti_70x100_DCH_web.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pavarotti_70x100_DCH_web.jpg 210w, https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pavarotti_70x100_DCH_web.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pavarotti_70x100_DCH_web.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pavarotti_70x100_DCH_web.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 177px) 100vw, 177px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inevitable that a young, all-round cinema buff, who has left a \u201cZalonian\u201d * steady job to become an exhibitor (amongst other things), is likely to be showered with interviews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And interesting to note that to the question \u201cHave you ever been sold out?\u201d he replies: \u201cAlmost, thanks to art-films, in particular the one on Monet!\u201d <br>The words of&nbsp;<strong>Joel Fioroni<\/strong>, 28, from Ticino, with a diploma in film-making from the CISA in Lugano, who has been manager of the&nbsp;<strong>Lux Art-house&nbsp;<\/strong>of Massagno since January 2018, are an eloquent expression of the role that added content can play for a cinema that chooses to focus on quality, in order to compete with the market leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> In this case the giant is the&nbsp;<strong>Cinestar&nbsp;<\/strong>of Lugano, which offers cutting-edge technology on its six screens, 3D and 4DX in- cluded, (i.e. high quality equipment which, thanks to the movement of the seats, creates sensorial effects synchronized with the action on the big screen). <br>The programming, however, is principally mainstream and Fioroni comments: \u201cFor us this is an advantage: we no longer have competitors in the field of art- house cinema. This is a genre with a sense of its own, one it will always have, and what\u2019s more we are decidedly open to events that allow us to make ourselves known to a wider public.\u201d <br>And so, with regard to broadening its horizons, alongside the usual offer of live opera and ballet, the Lux recently launched the initiative \u201cArt in the Cinema\u201d, based on unpublished documentaries from the world of art \u2013 exclusive to Ticino. <br>Shortly, \u201cHermitage \u2013 The power of art\u201d will be arriving from Nexo Digital with \u201cFrida \u2013 Viva la vida\u201d, which by virtue of a new agreement with the&nbsp;<strong>Arena Group&nbsp;<\/strong>will also be presented at the&nbsp;<strong>Palacinema&nbsp;<\/strong>and at the&nbsp;<strong>Muralto&nbsp;<\/strong>in Locarno. <br>In fact this season the Lux \u201cwill be working for three\u201d and taking its programme of added content to audiences in the city of the Golden Leop- ard, too. <br>The event formula still holds good: two appointments in the same week, one on Wednesday at 8.30 p.m, the other on Sunday at 6 p.m, mainly for a senior audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201carthouse\u201d and \u201cadded content off the beaten track\u201d formulas also work well in Basel. Here, the&nbsp;<strong>Kult.kino<\/strong>, a five-screen complex in the city centre, together with the two screens of the&nbsp;<strong>Kino.camera<\/strong>, offers a selection of the top productions of classical opera by prestigious theatres, screened \u2013 in their recorded versions naturally \u2013 on Sunday mornings. <br>\u201cThis formula,\u201d says&nbsp;<strong>Romy Gysin&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8211; the heart and soul of this authentic institution in quality cinema \u2013 has proved better suited to our spectators than the screening of live performances in the evening.\u201d <br>From October onwards, audiences in Basel who are fans of \u201chighbrow\u201d music, can see \u201cCarmen\u201d by the Zurich Opera, \u201cNorma\u201d by the Royal Theatre of Wallonia, the Teatro Real of Madrid\u2019s \u201cFlying Dutchman\u201d with Fura dels Baus and Beethoven\u2019s \u201cNinth Symphony\u201d by the Vienna State Opera. <br>But here, too, there is no lack of offer regarding the figurative arts. <br>Centre stage will be occupied by the Exhibition on Screen productions, starting with \u201cYoung Picasso\u201d and continuing with \u201cVan Gogh &amp; Japan\u201d, \u201cRembrandt\u201d and \u201cDegas: Passion for Perfection\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even more focused and decidedly less commonplace, is the \u201cprogramme\u201d combining cinema and the theatre, with a series of documentaries selected in collaboration with the Basel Theatre, also presented as \u201cevents\u201d on Sunday mornings. The title chosen to open the events is \u201cA Trail on the Water\u201d, dedicated to Abbado, Nono and Pollini. There is no lack of a \u201cscreening event\u201d on weekdays, either, thanks to \u201cMidday at the Cinema\u201d, centring on the cult content of the moment i.e. biopics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of this, last October \u201cPavarotti\u201d, Ron Howard\u2019s moving documentary, has been screened, which, following its release in the United States in June, has started out on an authentic world tour. <br>From the first week of October onwards Howard\u2019s third work devoted the super stars of music has been distributed in Switzerland by&nbsp;<strong>Path\u00e9 Films AG<\/strong>, whilst for years now&nbsp;<strong>Path\u00e9 Live&nbsp;<\/strong>has been bringing the most popular added content to the Swiss market, for example live opera from the Met and live ballet from the Moscow Bolshoi. <br>These productions are mainly hosted by the Path\u00e9 network, which comprises 79 screens in 8 complexes in 7 towns or cities \u2013 but also in other cinemas, such as the&nbsp;<strong>Arthouse Piccadilly&nbsp;<\/strong>in Zurich. <br>The&nbsp;<strong>Kitag group<\/strong>, in Basel, Berne, Lucerne, San Gallo and Zurich \u2013 still using the live formula &#8211; instead offers productions from London, such as opera by the Royal Opera House and performances by the Royal Ballet. <br>A wealth of culture but business, too. It is no coincidence that the market in Switzerland records the highest average price in Europe for added content (almost 24 euros in 2018, compared to the average price calculated for all performances on offer in movie theatres, which comes to around 13.50 euros). <br>And to quote Fioroni once again, \u201cAdded content can represent a safety net for the economic balance of a small theatre fighting to keep cinema alive on the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*<em>A reference to Checco Zalone, a well-known Italian comedian, whose humour revolves around topical stereotypes.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inevitable that a young, all-round cinema buff, who has left a \u201cZalonian\u201d * steady job to become an exhibitor (amongst other things), is likely to be showered with interviews.
