Festival, with a competition of (only) high quality world premieres that looks to the future without forgetting its impressive past and is not afraid of turning away the multitude of Italian companies\u00a0knocking at its door.<br \/>\nThis is basically the spirit behind the <strong>69th Venice International Film Festival<\/strong> to be staged in the \u201cPalazzo del Cinema\u201d and adjacent former Casino which have been renovated and modernized for the occasion, while work is being completed on the so-called \u201cPalazzetto del Cinema\u201d in the former Giardini area, that will join the existing buildings (now that the plans for a sumptuous \u201cPalazzo del Cinema\u201d have finally been shelved and the symbol of that project &#8211; the gaping hole in front of the Casino &#8211; has been filled in and tarred over).<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the line-up.<br \/>\n<strong>Alberto Barbera<\/strong>\u2019s Festival will attempt to escape from the jaws of gigantism: the official Selection contains 50 movies, all world premieres, divided between the Competition section (17 titles plus one, the inevitable last minute surprise), the Out of Competition section (15 drama features and 9 documentaries) and the \u201cOrizzonti\u201d section (18 features and 15 shorts).<br \/>\nThe Festival opens on August 29th with former Golden Lion Mira Nair\u2019s \u201cThe Reluctant Fundamentalist\u201d and the documentary \u201cEnzo Avitabile Music Life\u201d by Jonathan Demme, and ends on September 8th with \u201cL\u2019homme qui rit\u201d by Jean-Pierre Am\u00e9ris, starring G\u00e9rard Depardieu and Emmanuelle Seigner, all three of which are out of competition.<br \/>\nIn between, there will be a procession of films by leading directors such as Brian De Palma (\u201cPassion\u201d), Kim Ki-duc (\u201cPieta\u201d), Xavier Giannoli (\u201cSuperstar\u201d), Takeshi Kitano (\u201cOutrage Beyond\u201d), Terrence Malick (\u201cTo the Wonder\u201d), Valeria Sarmiento (\u201cLinhas de Wellington\u201d), Olivier Assayas (\u201cApr\u00e8s Mai (Something in the Air)\u201d) in Competition, and Susanne Bier, Pascale Bonitzer, Amos Gitai, Spike Lee, De Oliveira and Redford in an out of competition section characterized by a high number of documentaries. 41 countries will be represented with a good but not excessive number of US companies providing a reasonable number of stars for the red carpet, greater numbers from France (due to the many co-productions it is involved in), and a better showing of Italians than expected, although the numbers are lower than in the past.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/venice-69the-festival-changes-direction\/_dsc6144-nef\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3441\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3441\" title=\"_DSC6144.NEF\" src=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Company-You-Keep-Robert-Redford-LOW-1-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Company-You-Keep-Robert-Redford-LOW-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Company-You-Keep-Robert-Redford-LOW-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-Company-You-Keep-Robert-Redford-LOW-1.jpg 695w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>They will be presenting the standard three movies in Competition: the long-awaited \u201cBella Addormentata \u201c by Marco Bellocchio (controversy alert!), \u201cUn giorno speciale\u201d by Francesca Comencini and \u201c\u00c8 stato il figlio\u201d by Daniele Cipr\u00ec.<br \/>\nOut of Competition, the Italians will make up the hard core of the special events with their documentaries: Cavani (\u201cClarisse\u201d), Giralducci-Ricciardi (\u201cSfiorando il muro\u201d), Mazzacurati (\u201cMedici con l\u2019Africa\u201d) and Vicari (\u201cLa nave dolce\u201d).<br \/>\nThe same goes for the movies in the \u201cOrizzonti\u201d section, almost all of which, this year, it will be possible to pay to view simultaneously online: De Matteo (\u201cGli equilibristi\u201d), Mereu (\u201cBellas Mariposas\u201d) and the international co-productions \u201cL\u2019intervallo\u201d by Di Costanzo and \u201cLow Tide\u201d by Minervini, with Giannone and Sironi featuring amongst the shorts directors.<br \/>\nThe Festival line-up will be completed by an interesting retrospective celebrating 80 years of the Venice Festival (1932-2012), with 10 restored movies from the archives of the Biennale Cinema, around twenty masterpieces from the past at Venezia Classici and the main event, Cimino\u2019s \u201cHeaven\u2019s Gate\u201d.<br \/>\nWith regard to the future of cinema, the Biennale College \u00a0project will be launched during the Festival, a laboratory open to young filmmakers from all over the world that aims to realize low cost movies, with the objective of generating 3 works to be screened at the next edition of the Festival.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>We should also mention the other selections that will be presented alongside and outside the Festival: the International Critics\u2019 Week and the Giornate degli Autori-Venice Days.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/venice-69the-festival-changes-direction\/e-stato-il-figlio-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3442\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3442\" title=\"E' stato il figlio\" src=\"https:\/\/cinema.video\/wp-content\/uploads\/E-stato-il-figlio-Daniele-Cipri\u00a6\u00c7-LOW-5-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a>In accordance with tradition the former will feature 7 movies, all of which are world premieres: due to space limitations, we will just mention \u201cLa citt\u00e0 ideale\u201d, the debut work by Luigi Lo Cascio, the \u201cWater\u201d events, a Palestinian-Israeli collective work, and \u201cKiss of the Damned\u201d by Alexandra \u201cXan\u201d Cassavetes, daughter of John and Gena Rowlands, and sister of Nick.<br \/>\nAs usual, Venice Days will have a packed program to which new titles are constantly being added.<br \/>\nThe latest arrival is \u201cPinocchio\u201d by D\u2019Al\u00f2, the opening movie, featuring drawings by Mattotti and music by Dalla.<br \/>\nThere will be lots of Italians at the Pagoda (the venue for Venice Days): all the Special Events movies and all of Venice Nights. There will also be a couple of movies in the Official Section (\u201cIl gemello\u201d by Marra and \u201cAcciaio\u201d by Mordini).
