{"id":10970,"date":"2016-05-09T08:08:29","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T08:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cinema.video\/?p=10970"},"modified":"2026-04-10T03:33:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:33:48","slug":"the-filman-existential-noir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinema.video\/it\/the-filman-existential-noir","title":{"rendered":"THE FILM An existential noir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am really very pleased that \u00abPericle \u00bb has been chosen by Un Certain Regard: it brought luck to \u00abHoney\u00bb, it will do this movie good as well\u201d.<br \/>\nThis is how<strong> Valeria Golino<\/strong> commented on the announcement that the film she produced with <strong>Riccardo Scamarcio<\/strong> and <strong>Viola Prestieri<\/strong> has been selected to represent Italy on La Croisette.<br \/>\nThen she talks about the project\u2019s genesis. \u201cWe had been after the rights to this book for years, ever since Abel Ferrara who of- fered Riccardo the lead role, was then unable to make it\u201d. For this reason \u201c\u00abPericle\u00bb is, above all, Riccardo\u2019s baby: he proposed it to me and to Viola Prestieri, his partners in <strong>Buena Onda<\/strong>. It had captured his heart\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to Giuseppe Ferrandino\u2019s novel (published by Adelphi), once they got their hands on it and with the \u2013 almost immediate \u2013 in- volvement of director <strong>Stefano Mordini<\/strong>, \u201cwe changed the settings: from Naples, which we felt was already overused by cinema, to Belgium, Liege, and the north of France. Inevitably this led to a change in the story. For this reason I say that it is very loosely based on the book. Whilst the novel was already a noir with an existential soul, now we are faced with an existential story dressed up as a genre film\u201d.<br \/>\nIt was the director\u2019s idea to move towards northern Europe.<br \/>\nHe also worked on the screenplay with <strong>Francesca Marciano<\/strong> and <strong>Valia Santella<\/strong>, who wrote \u00abHoney\u00bb with Golino.<br \/>\n\u201cHe has infused the story with his way of being, making everything even more introspective, turning the movie into the sentimental education of a man \u2013 a \u201cmobster\u201d in the Camorra \u2013 who works his way up from nothing to become a person with an awareness of himself and, consequently, of his own actions.<br \/>\nHe wanted a different, colder \u201ctemperature\u201d. It was essential to move him away from Naples\u201d.<br \/>\nOnly when the screenplay was completed did Buena Onda go looking for international partners, in France and Belgium (and not the other way around, as usually happens, with the setting chosen according to the foreign co-producers).<br \/>\nHelped by the good international reaction to \u00abHoney\u00bb (which was also launched at Un Certain Regard, in 2013) and the fame of Viola Prestieri (she worked with Sorrentino on \u00abThe Consequences of Love\u00bb and \u00abThis Must Be The Place\u00bb) as well as the value of the project, the Dardenne brothers\u2019 Belgian <strong>Les Films du Fleuve<\/strong> and the Parisian <strong>Les Productions du Tr\u00e9sor<\/strong> became involved.<br \/>\nIn Italy <strong>Rai Cinema<\/strong> worked alongside the original group, whilst contributions arrived from the Regione Lazio\u2019s audiovisual fund and from <strong>MiBACT<\/strong>.
